Description

A comforting and hearty Amish Country Casserole featuring ground beef, egg noodles, creamy mushroom soup, and melted cheddar cheese. This easy-to-make dish combines simple ingredients into a delicious baked casserole perfect for family dinners.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped (about 1 cup)
  • 1 cup egg noodles, uncooked
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup (10.5 oz)
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 cup frozen peas (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the casserole.
  2. Cook Ground Beef and Onion: In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef and chopped onion until the beef is fully cooked and onions are soft, approximately 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess grease from the skillet.
  3. Mix Cream Sauce: In a mixing bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, milk, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Stir until well blended, forming a creamy sauce.
  4. Combine Ingredients: Add the uncooked egg noodles and the cream mixture to the skillet with the cooked beef and onions. If using, add the frozen peas as well. Stir thoroughly to evenly combine all ingredients.
  5. Transfer to Casserole Dish: Grease a casserole dish and transfer the mixture, spreading it out evenly.
  6. Bake Covered: Cover the casserole dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes to allow the noodles to cook and flavors to meld.
  7. Add Cheese and Bake Uncovered: Remove the foil and sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top of the casserole. Return the dish to the oven and bake uncovered for an additional 5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  8. Rest and Serve: Let the casserole sit for about 5 minutes after baking to set before serving. This helps the casserole firm up for easier portions.

Notes

  • You can substitute frozen peas with other vegetables like corn or green beans for variety.
  • For a richer flavor, use whole milk or add a bit of sour cream to the cream sauce mixture.
  • If preferred, swap cheddar cheese for mozzarella or a cheese blend.
  • Make sure not to overcook the noodles ahead of time as they cook during baking.
  • This casserole can be prepared in advance and refrigerated before baking.
