Ingredients
Scale
Sauce and Base
- 1 can condensed Cream of Mushroom soup (10.5 ounces)
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper, to taste
Green Beans
- 4 cups cut green beans (2 cans green beans, or one 16 ounce package frozen green beans, or 1 1/2 pounds fresh green beans)
Topping
- 1 1/3 cup crispy French fried onions (divided)
Instructions
- Prepare the Casserole Dish: Spray a 9×9 inch casserole dish generously with cooking spray to prevent sticking and ease cleanup.
- Prepare the Green Beans: If using fresh green beans, wash, trim, and cut them, then blanch in boiling water for 2 minutes before draining. If using canned green beans, drain them thoroughly in a colander. Frozen green beans should be thawed and drained.
- Make the Sauce: In a medium bowl, combine the condensed cream of mushroom soup and milk, stirring until smooth and lump-free. Add the soy sauce and mix thoroughly.
- Mix Green Beans and Sauce: Stir the prepared green beans and two-thirds (about 2/3 cup) of the crispy French fried onions into the soup mixture. Season with pepper to taste and mix everything well to combine evenly.
- Assemble the Casserole: Pour and spread the green bean mixture evenly into the prepared casserole dish.
- Cook in Air Fryer: Place the casserole dish in the air fryer and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 10 minutes. Remove, stir the casserole gently, sprinkle the remaining 2/3 cup of French fried onions evenly over the top, and air fry for an additional 2 minutes until the onions turn golden and crispy.
- Cook in Oven: Alternatively, bake the casserole in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 25 minutes. Remove from oven, stir gently, sprinkle the remaining onions on top, and bake for another 5 minutes until the onions are golden brown and crispy.
Notes
- Blanching fresh green beans helps retain their color and texture in the casserole.
- You can substitute soy sauce with tamari for a gluten-free option.
- Use crispy French fried onions for the classic crunchy topping; avoid soggy or stale onions for best results.
- Cooking times may vary slightly depending on your air fryer or oven model.
