  • Author: Rafael
  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: About 4 cups (serves 6-8) 1x

Description

This easy homemade marinara sauce is a flavorful and versatile tomato-based sauce perfect for pasta, pizza, and more. It combines sautéed onions with a smooth blend of stewed tomatoes, tomato paste, garlic, and Italian seasoning, simmered to perfection to deepen the flavors.

Ingredients

Scale

Vegetables & Aromatics

  • 1 small diced yellow onion
  • 3 cloves minced garlic

Tomato Base

  • 2 (15-ounce) cans stewed tomatoes
  • 1 (6-ounce) can tomato paste

Seasonings & Liquids

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons granulated sugar (or more to taste)
  • ½ cup chicken broth or water

Instructions

  1. Heat the Oil and Onion: In a medium-sized saucepan over medium-high heat, add 2 tablespoons olive oil and the diced onion. Cook for 3-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onion becomes tender and translucent.
  2. Blend the Tomato Mixture: In a food processor or blender, combine the stewed tomatoes, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, minced garlic, salt, black pepper, and granulated sugar. Pulse the ingredients until the sauce is smooth and well combined.
  3. Sauté the Sauce: Pour the blended tomato mixture into the saucepan with the cooked onions. Add ½ cup of chicken broth or water to loosen the sauce. Simmer the mixture on medium heat, stirring occasionally, for about 10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld and thicken slightly.

Notes

  • You can adjust the sugar to balance the acidity of the tomatoes according to your taste.
  • For a vegetarian or vegan version, substitute chicken broth with vegetable broth or water.
  • This sauce stores well in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or can be frozen for longer preservation.
  • Use it as a base for pasta dishes, pizzas, or as a dipping sauce.
