Ingredients
Scale
Crust
- 1 and 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/2 cup cold butter, cubed
- 1 cup pecan halves
Caramel Topping
- 2/3 cup butter (from the total 1 cup)
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
Toppings
- 1 cup milk chocolate chips
- Sea salt flakes, for garnish
- Drizzled caramel sauce (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the oven and pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper for easy removal.
- Make the crust: In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and 1/2 cup of packed brown sugar. Cut in the cold cubed butter using a pastry cutter or fingertips until the mixture becomes crumbly with pea-sized pieces.
- Form the crust: Press the crumbly mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking pan to create an even base for the bars.
- Add pecans: Sprinkle the pecan halves evenly over the pressed crust, distributing them well for texture and flavor.
- Prepare the caramel: In a saucepan set over medium heat, melt the remaining 2/3 cup butter and 1/2 cup packed brown sugar. Stir consistently until the mixture bubbles, then cook for an additional one minute to thicken the caramel slightly.
- Assemble and bake: Pour the hot caramel mixture evenly over the pecans and crust in the pan. Place the pan in the oven and bake for 18 to 20 minutes or until the edges are golden brown and the caramel is bubbly.
- Add chocolate topping: Remove the pan from the oven and immediately sprinkle the milk chocolate chips evenly over the hot caramel. Let the chocolate sit for a few minutes to soften, then spread it evenly over the top to create a smooth chocolate layer.
- Finish and serve: Optionally, drizzle caramel sauce on top and sprinkle with sea salt flakes for an extra touch of flavor contrast. Allow to cool slightly before cutting into bars and serving.
Notes
- Ensure the butter used in the crust is cold to achieve a crumbly texture.
- Use parchment paper to prevent sticking and ease removal.
- Letting the chocolate chips soften before spreading will give a glossy, even chocolate layer.
- Sea salt flakes enhance the flavor by balancing the sweetness with a bit of saltiness.
- You can store the bars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for longer freshness.
