Ingredients
Scale
Cake
- 1 box Red Velvet Cake Mix (plus ingredients called for on box to make the cake)
- 3 Tbsp Cream Cheese Frosting (pre-made)
Coating and Decoration
- 12 oz Vibrant Green Candy Melts
- 1 teaspoon Vegetable Shortening
- 36 Red Candy Hearts or Red Candy Sprinkles
- 24–36 Cake Pop Sticks or Lollipop Sticks
Instructions
- Prepare the Cake: Follow the instructions on the red velvet cake mix box to bake the cake properly. Once baked, allow it to cool completely at room temperature before proceeding.
- Crumble the Cake: Remove the cake from the pan and discard the brown outer crust layer. Crumble the soft interior of the cake into a large mixing bowl.
- Mix with Frosting: Add the cream cheese frosting to the crumbled cake and stir thoroughly until the mixture is uniform and holds together well.
- Form Cake Balls: Using your hands or a cookie scoop, shape the mixture into approximately 24 to 36 evenly sized cake balls and place them on a lined cookie sheet.
- Melt the Candy Coating: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the green candy melts and vegetable shortening. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, until fully melted and smooth.
- Insert Sticks: Dip each cake pop stick into the melted green candy coating and insert it about halfway into each cake ball. Place the assembled cake pops in the freezer for 10-15 minutes to firm up.
- Coat Cake Pops: Dip each chilled cake pop into the melted candy melts, ensuring they are fully covered. Allow any excess coating to drip back into the bowl for a neat finish.
- Set Cake Pops: Insert the sticks of the coated cake pops into a block of styrofoam to let the candy coating harden at room temperature.
- Prepare Drizzle: Pour remaining melted candy coating into a decorating bag and snip off the tip at a 45-degree angle for controlled drizzle.
- Decorate: Drizzle the remaining green candy melt over the top of each cake pop, then immediately add a red candy heart or sprinkles to each before the candy hardens.
- Serve: Allow all cake pops to fully dry before serving or gifting. Enjoy your colorful and festive Grinch Cake Pops!
Notes
- Removing the cake crust is essential to ensure smooth, evenly coated cake pops.
- Chilling the cake pops before coating prevents them from falling apart during dipping.
- Vegetable shortening helps thin the candy melts, making them easier to dip and coat.
- If candy melts thicken during use, reheat them gently in the microwave in short intervals.
- Use a cookie scoop for consistent cake ball sizes to ensure even coating and baking times.
