  • Author: Rafael
  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: About 4 cups (serves 6-8) 1x

Description

This Quick and Easy Marinara Sauce is a flavorful and simple homemade tomato sauce perfect for pasta, pizza, or as a base for other dishes. With a savory blend of herbs and garlic, it simmers gently to develop deep, rich flavors in just 30 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale

Marinara Sauce Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1/2 yellow onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 6 ounces tomato paste
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon Kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth (water can be used as substitute)

Instructions

  1. Sauté Onions: Heat the olive oil in a pan over medium-low heat and add the diced yellow onion. Cook gently until the onions are very lightly browned, which helps bring out their natural sweetness.
  2. Add Garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for about 15 seconds until fragrant, being careful not to let it brown or burn to preserve its fresh taste.
  3. Add Remaining Ingredients: Pour in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried oregano, dried basil, Kosher salt, sugar, crushed red pepper, and chicken broth. Mix well to combine all ingredients thoroughly.
  4. Simmer Sauce: Cover the pan and reduce heat to low. Let the sauce simmer gently for 30 minutes, allowing all the flavors to meld and develop into a rich marinara sauce.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian or vegan version, substitute chicken broth with vegetable broth or water.
  • Adjust crushed red pepper to taste if you prefer less or more heat.
  • Stir occasionally during simmering to prevent sauce from sticking to the pan.
  • The sauce can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
  • Use fresh herbs instead of dried for a brighter flavor, adding 1 tablespoon fresh basil and oregano towards the end of cooking.
