Description

Turmeric Rice is a vibrant and aromatic side dish featuring fluffy basmati rice infused with turmeric, fresh cilantro, and fragrant aromatics. Perfectly cooked by simmering in vegetable broth, this flavorful rice complements a variety of meals and adds a colorful, healthy touch to your plate.

Ingredients

Scale

Rice and Spice

  • 2 cups basmati rice
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt

Aromatics

  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 garlic clove, crushed or grated
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, finely grated

Liquid

  • 2 1/4 cups vegetable broth (or water)

Fresh Herbs (Optional)

  • 1 1/2 cups finely chopped, tightly packed fresh cilantro (or dill, parsley, or a combination)

Instructions

  1. Rinse the rice: Wash the basmati rice in cold water and strain it. Repeat this process until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and helps achieve fluffy, separate grains.
  2. Sauté the aromatics: Heat the olive oil in a medium non-stick saucepan over medium-high heat. When the oil shimmers, add the finely chopped onion and cook, stirring frequently, until it softens and becomes translucent. Add the crushed garlic and grated ginger and stir for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Add turmeric and rice: Sprinkle the ground turmeric evenly over the onion mixture, then add the rinsed rice. Stir thoroughly to coat the rice with the aromatics and turmeric.
  4. Add liquid and boil: Pour in the vegetable broth or water and add the Kosher salt. Increase the heat to bring the mixture to a boil.
  5. Simmer the rice: Once boiling, stir in the chopped fresh cilantro evenly. Immediately reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan tightly, and let the rice simmer gently for 12 to 15 minutes, or until all the liquid is absorbed and the rice is tender.
  6. Rest, fluff, and serve: Remove the saucepan from heat but keep it covered for 10 minutes to allow the rice to steam. After resting, uncover and gently fluff the rice with a fork to separate the grains. Serve warm as a side dish.

Notes

  • Rinsing the rice multiple times is key to achieving fluffy, non-sticky rice.
  • Vegetable broth adds extra flavor, but water can be used for a milder taste.
  • The fresh herbs are optional but add a bright, fresh note to the dish.
  • If you prefer, you can substitute olive oil with any other neutral cooking oil.
  • Make sure to keep the lid tightly closed during simmering to trap steam and cook the rice evenly.
